I’m William Couch, a 22-year-old designer in Arlington, Va. I work for USA TODAY as a Designer, creating interactive graphics for usatoday.com.

Professional Life

Formally, I graduated in April 2007 from the University of Michigan with a BA in Communication Studies and Screen Arts & Cultures. I pursued both Mathematics and Computer Science as majors, but found that the sort of creative fulfillment I sought wasn’t there. Now I revel in storytelling and visualizing quantitative data through graphics and interactive media, which led me to my position at the Sentinel.

Informally, I’ve always found an interest in technology, media, and design. Little formal education taught me these disciplines; instead, I’m a self-directed learner, and have primarily taught myself in these areas.

While at Michigan, I worked for a variety of publications and student groups, including The Michigan Daily, and The Every Three Weekly; however, it was through the Daily that I got my first break. Encouraged, by my design editor, I applied for an intern competition in 2006 and a few months later, landed an internship at The Arizona Republic, a large metropolitan paper based in Phoenix. However, life has a weird way of taking sharp turns, and a job offer with the Sentinel preempted the internship.

Now, I work at USA TODAY with an incredible group of talented graphic artists, designers and developers who, together, create compelling, journalistic content for the country.

Personal Life

Aside from technology, media and design, my life is consumed by an undying love for photography, wine, film, music, food, LOST, and 30 Rock.

And, no, I don’t own an iPhone. (Anyone else waiting for 3G?)
